How to Care for Your DTF-Printed Apparel (and Keep It Looking Great)

Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing delivers vibrant, full-color designs with sharp detail — but like any decorated garment, your print will last longest when you treat it right. Follow these simple guidelines to protect the design wash after wash.

Washing

Turn your garment inside out before every wash. This is the single most important step. Turning it inside out keeps the print away from the drum, zippers, and other garments that can abrade the surface.

  • Water temperature: Wash in cold or warm water (up to 30 °C / 86 °F). Hot water accelerates adhesive breakdown. ⚠️ [VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING: Confirm the maximum safe temperature for your specific DTF supplier's film and adhesive powder.]
  • Cycle: Use a gentle or delicate cycle. Aggressive agitation stresses the print edges.
  • Detergent: Use a mild, liquid detergent. Avoid detergents with bleach, optical brighteners, or fabric softener — all of these can dull or lift the print over time.
  • Do not bleach. Ever.

Drying

  • Air-dry when possible. Lay flat or hang to dry away from direct sunlight. UV exposure can fade any ink over time.
  • Tumble dry on low heat only. High heat is the enemy of DTF adhesion. ⚠️ [VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING: Confirm with your DTF printer/supplier whether tumble drying at low heat is safe for their specific transfer and substrate combination.]
  • Do not wring or twist the garment to remove water.

Ironing & Heat

  • Do not iron directly on the print. The heat and pressure will melt or distort the film.
  • If ironing is needed, turn the garment inside out and iron on the reverse side at low heat, or use a pressing cloth between the iron and the print.
  • Do not dry-clean unless the care label on the blank garment specifically allows it — and even then, inform the cleaner about the DTF print.
  • Avoid leaving garments in a hot car or prolonged exposure to steam.

What to Expect From the Print Feel

DTF prints have a slight texture — you can feel the design as a thin, smooth layer on the fabric. This is completely normal and is characteristic of the process. Compared to screen printing, DTF prints tend to sit slightly "on top" of the fabric rather than fully absorbing into it.

  • Stiffness: New DTF prints may feel slightly stiffer than the surrounding fabric. This typically softens with the first few washes. ⚠️ [VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING: Note approximately how many washes it takes on your specific fabric/transfer combo before softening occurs, so you can give customers a realistic expectation.]
  • Cracking & peeling: When cared for properly (cold/warm wash, low heat, inside out), DTF prints are durable and should not crack or peel under normal use. Cracking or peeling is most often caused by high heat, harsh chemicals, or mechanical abrasion. ⚠️ [VERIFY BEFORE PUBLISHING: Do not promise a specific wash-count lifespan — test your own products and report what you observe.]
  • Color vibrancy: Colors may mellow slightly over many washes, as with any print method. Starting with proper care preserves brightness significantly longer.
